Yes, I’m biting Tom Breihan’s long-standing Status Ain’t Hood Quarterly Report column something fierce, but Tom’s one of my favorites so let’s consider this flattery more than imitation (even though there’s a little bit of that in there as well). That said, this is an enjoyable exercise and it allows me to keep tabs on my favorite music throughout the year since...

Here is a brief list of music I’ve enjoyed from the past year. See also: 2010.

Wayne Campbell: So, do you come to Milwaukee often?
Alice Cooper: Well, I'm a regular visitor here, but Milwaukee has certainly had its share of visitors. The French missionaries and explorers were coming here as early as the late 1600's to trade with the Native Americans.
Pete: In fact, isn't "Milwaukee" an Indian name?
Alice Cooper: Yes, Pete, it is. Actually , it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Algonquin for "the good land."
Wayne Campbell: I was not aware of that.

I’m glad that this is starting to become an expected thing at music festivals. I’m also glad I’m not getting sunburned in a Chicago park right now.

If you get a minute, you should read Wright Thompson’s essay on Pete’s Famous over at Grantland (which has been killing it lately). I’m glad to say that I’ve been there once — the place was delicious.

“Skinny Love” is a song that does not invite participation. It’s a solitary number; the antithesis of group work. This performance by Vernon and his band turns it into a celebratory, campfire sing-a-long. The reworking is a welcome surprise to what could have been just another performance. Come to think of it, this version is actually kind of perfect.
